Road Trip Continues at Southern Wednesday Night

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri baseball (3-1) continues its season-opening road trip with a Wednesday, Feb. 23, visit to Southern (2-1) for a 6 p.m. first pitch against the Jaguars.

The Tigers are fresh off a series win in the four-game opener at Nicholls State, the program’s best start since 2018. Southern opened its season with a 2-1 showing in the Andre Dawson Classic.

Fans can catch Mizzou baseball on the airwaves all season long on KTGR and the Tiger Radio Network. Tex Little and Matt Michaels will have the call.

SERIES BUSINESS

  • Mizzou meets Southern for the first time on the diamond. The Tigers are 16-3 all-time against current members of the SWAC.
  • The Tigers most recent matchups against the SWAC came in 2019 when the black & gold bested Florida A&M and Alabama A&M.

SCOUTING THE JAGUARS

  • Southern sits at 2-1 after wins over Alabama State and Jackson State. The Jaguars lost to Florida A&M to close the Andre Dawson Classic.
  • All three of Southern’s games last weekend were decided by two runs or less. The Jags split a pair of one-run contests.
  • Hunter Tabb went 7-for-10 on opening weekend with a pair of doubles to lead Southern.
  • On the mound, the Jaguars surrendered just six walks in 27.2 innings. Southern held opponents to just .252 hitting.

IT TAKES TWO (OUTS)

  • In its 3-1 opening weekend, Mizzou did unrivaled damage with two outs offensively.
  • The Tigers produced 24 two-out RBI in the series at Nicholls while hitting a monstrous .418 with two down.
  • Ross Lovich leads the Tigers with five two-out RBI while Josh Day and Carlos Peña each have four.
  • Mizzou has hit three of its five homers this season with two outs.
  • In all of 2021, Mizzou had 90 two-out RBI, meaning the 24 on opening weekend are 26.7% of the Tigers total from a season ago.

TAKE IT ON THE RUN

  • Mizzou was dynamic on the basepaths on opening weekend, going a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen bases as a team.
  • The Tigers stole home twice on double steals as part of their onslaught on the bases.
  • Ross Lovich led the black & gold with four stolen bases, including three in Saturday’s win alone.
  • Seven different Tigers had a stolen base on opening weekend.

HISTORIC HOT START

  • By scoring 12 and 14 runs in its first two games of the season, Mizzou accomplished a feat it has replicated only five times in its previous 128 seasons.
  • The 12-plus runs in back-to-back games to open a season marked the first occurrence since 2007.
  • The other seasons the Tigers started with a dozen or more in the first two games were 1999, 1996, 1988 and 1936.
  • The 12 runs in the opener were the most since 2009 for the Tigers.
