NASCAR driver Ryan Newman walked out of the hospital yesterday, less than 48 hours after his horrific crash at the Daytona 500.
Video shows Newman leaving Halifax Medical Center holding the hands of his two children.
After seeing the crash, some are wondering how he survived.
It’s clear that safety measures NASCAR put into place after the 2001 death of Dale Earnhardt at the Daytona 500 are working. Like, energy-absorbing walls, and head and neck support devices, which attaches to a driver’s helmet to keep his head from snapping forward.
In the 19 years since Dale Earnhardt’s death, zero drivers have died.
A former Daytona winner said the seat in today’s race cars form a “complete cocoon” around the driver: “It eliminates the side to side movement.” Underneath the car’s skin is steel plating around the driver to keep anything from penetrating through.
