The West Plains Sunrise Rotary Club’s 19th Annual Tom Smith Spring Golf Classic, will be held on Saturday, May 29th, 2021 at the North Terra Golf Course in West Plains with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. The tournament will benefit the Rotary Youth Backpack program. The West Plains Rotary Backpack Program serves area elementary age kids by sending a pack of food home each weekend to help kids who might not have enough food at home. The tournament will be a three-person scramble. Cost will be $45 per person or $135 per team. The number of flights will be determined by the number of teams. HS sports today, The Lady Zizzer soccer team will host Greenwood for their final regular season game for the 2021 soccer season, as districts start next week.

 

MSU-WP Grizzlies has a 6’8″Australian from BM College Jet Pathways, and it’s their first ever scholarship signing. Merrick Small commits to Missouri State University West Plains. Merrick looks to be a solid player around the rim and can shoot the ball from outside.

 

The Viola Longhorn baseball team are district champs and regional champs, the Longhorns sit at 22-1 and ranked #1 in class 1 as they head to the Arkansas state playoffs Thursday May 13th when the Longhorns host the 15-7 Hermitage Hermits at 3pm.

 

Results from the Andy Hawkins Memorial gold tournament played at North Terra golf course in West Plains. Championship flight winner was Roger Tune shooting a 60, A-flight winner Preston Eagleman shooting a 71, B-flight winner Randy Shipley shooting a 76, C-flight winner Gary Lambe shooting an 80. The tournament was a one person 18-hole scramble tournament.

 

West Plains native Bill Virdon will visit West Plains and attend a meet and greet at the Ozark Heritage Welcome Center, 2999 Porter Wagoner Blvd., on Friday, May 21 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend. At the age of eighteen, he was signed by the New York Yankees. He later joined the St. Louis Cardinals and became the National League’s Rookie of the Year. At the age of 31, Virdon won the Golden Glove Award. Virdon was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1956 and was a key player in the Pirates’ 1960 World Series Championship. Virdon retired in 1965 with 1,596 MLB hits, a career batting average of .267 with 91 home runs during his 1,583-game NL career.
