Women’s Basketball Downs Northwest Missouri State in Preseason Exhibition

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri women’s basketball team began its 2022-23 campaign with a 70-27 victory against Northwest Missouri State at Mizzou Arena Wednesday, Oct. 26.

The Tigers opened the game on a 34-0 run to overpower the Bearcats in the first half. Junior Jayla Kelly led Mizzou with eight first-half points to spark the Tigers’ offense in the rout. She finished with a game-high 12 points in the victory.

Mizzou’s defense heavily aided the Tigers’ cause early in the contest. Northwest Missouri State didn’t register a point through the first 16:16 of game time while the defense forced five steals before the Bearcats’ first basket.

The defense didn’t relent, forcing 22 turnovers through the entirety of the contest. Mizzou also recorded 11 steals along with four blocks.

NOTES

  • Missouri is now 36-1 in exhibition matchups, remaining undefeated under Head Coach Robin Pingeton.
  • For the first time in an exhibition game, the Tigers held their opponent scoreless through the first quarter.
  • First-year Tigers Katlyn Gilbert, Averi Kroenke and Ashton Judd suited up for their first contest at Mizzou.
  • Every Tiger that appeared in the contest registered a field goal
  • Two Tigers, senior Hayley Frank and junior Sara-Rose Smith, each recorded double-digit rebounds with 13 and 12, respectively.
  • Kelly led the team with 12 points.
