Bill Monroe

Retired First Sgt. Addis William (Bill) Monroe, passed away on January 22, 2023, at his home in Plato, MO. He was born January 31, 1938 in Alton, Illinois to George William Monroe and Ruth Antrobus.

Bill married Annette Lane on January 22, 2000.

He had 5 sons.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Will and Eric; brothers, Paul, David, Ernie, and Jimmy; and sisters, Patsy and Mary.

He is survived by his wife, Annette; children, Larry, Billy, Jimmy, Mike Anderson, Beau McMahon, and Larenie Licausi & husband, Chuck; bonus children, Kelly Fisher, Bobby Hearty, Trent Packer, Sherelle Hathaway, and Deb McDowell; siblings, Larry Monroe, Tom Alt & wife, Debbie, George Beneke, Alice Bowling & husband, Greg, and Bob Montgomery & wife, Gloria; sister-in-law, Lynette Shondel & husband, Brian; and, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and several other family members and friends made throughout the years.

First Sgt. Monroe served a total of twenty-seven years as a member of the United States Army. Upon his military retirement in 1987, he then joined the Laclede County Sheriff’s Department in 1988, and served as Chief Deputy until his retirement in April 2000. He volunteered as a fire fighter for nearly sixty years, serving in countless locations, all over the world.

Bill was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ and was baptized at a young age. He enjoyed listening to gospel hymns in his free time and always encouraged those around him to choose the right path and to serve others in their community. In his final years, he developed a strong friendship with Pastor Wes Mayfield. He found great comfort and reassurance through the time they shared and especially enjoyed visiting and going fishing with Wes.

Upon his retirement from LCSD, Bill worked as an over-the-road truck driver, a dump truck driver, and a road grader operator for Roubidoux Township. He was co-owner of M & M Pilot Car, L.L.C. with his wife Annette for six years, until illness would no longer allow him to continue working.

Throughout his life, Bill enjoyed to travel and explored many regions and cultures around the world. He proudly defended his country and dedicated his life toward his passion for serving and helping others. His favorite past times included spending time with family and friends, fishing, listening to old country and western music, and telling Old River Road stories.

He will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know him. Although his time on earth has now concluded, his legacy will continue to live on and enrich the hearts and lives of many, through the enormous positive impact his life has contributed to those he loved and the world around him.
