Dora Fourth-Graders Fundraiser Brings K9 Hero to the Classroom – Watch A Practice With A Deputy In A Bite Suit

Dora, MO. – The Dora R-III School District’s fourth-grade class has launched a fundraiser to collect donations of food, toys, and essential supplies for local animal shelters. The donation period began on September 23rd and will end on October 4th. To show appreciation for their efforts, the Ozark County Sheriff’s Department sent Deputy Josh Sherman and K9 Karo to give a special presentation to the class.

During the presentation, Deputy Sherman explained the vital role of a K9 on the police team and described the specific tasks Karo performs. He then demonstrated Karo’s skills with the help of Deputy Jeff Lane, who wore a protective bite suit. In the gymnasium, the students watched as Karo tackled Deputy Lane. While this was happening, Deputy Sherman explained the commands—given in Dutch—that he uses to instruct Karo to track, bite, and release suspects when necessary.

After the bite suit demonstration, School Resource Officer Jeremy McKee put on a bite sleeve and “played” with Karo in the gym. Deputy Sherman explained that, for Karo, the bite suit and bite sleeve are like fun games. The event ended with Deputy Sherman and Deputy Lane answering questions from the fourth-grade students.

If you would like to donate food, toys, or pet supplies for cats and dogs, donations can be dropped off at the Dora R-III School in Dora, Missouri, in support of the fourth-grade community service project.
