Flu Season Returns; Maintaining Good Respiratory Hygiene

It’s September now. The kids are back in school, and temperatures are coming down from the deep summers highs. At least hopefully. Still yet, this means that as the kids get closer and temperatures fall, cold and flu season will be making a return to the spotlight.

As we get into this time of the year, remember that we’re all more susceptible to the microorganisms that contribute to sickness, and to maintain good habits to keep yourself healthy.

The Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center has put some effort into encouraging the public to maintain these habits with reminders listed below:

  1. Cough or Sneeze into a Tissue: Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze helps to contain germs. Be sure to dispose of the tissue immediately and wash your hands afterward.
  2. Wear a Mask if You Have Symptoms: Consider wearing a mask if you’re experiencing symptoms like a cough or sore throat. It’s a small but effective step to prevent the spread of germs to those around you.
  3. Practice Regular Hand Hygiene: Washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses. When soap and water aren’t available, hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is a good alternative.

In a post Covid-19 world, we learned a lot of ways to be vigilant to signs of sickness, and while things aren’t on the same level as they were then, remember to maintain good habits going through the year to stay healthy.
