Judy Young

Judith Pauline Young, 78 of Alton, Missouri, departed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, August 23 ,
2022 at her home. She was born November 12, 1943 in Minneapolis, MN to Gerald A and Mable M
Schunk.

Judy, as she was lovingly known, was the oldest of seven children and began building her
nurturing skills from an early age taking on the role of second mother to her brothers and sisters, J.R.,
Larry, Patty, Terrence, Randy and Kathy. She married Jerry L. McGinnis in 1960 and together they had
three girls, Jodie, Joyce and Janice. She met and married William T. Young in 1988 and gained five
additional children Billy, Laurel, Paul, Frank and Anne. In 1989, she moved to Alton, MO, Bill Young’s
hometown, and lived there for her remaining years.

Judy graduated from Missouri Southern State College, Joplin, Mo as a non-traditional student in 1979. Throughout her life she counseled, promoted and assisted any and all who looked toward higher
education as a possibility. She recognized that higher education could absolutely set the foundation for
a young person to be a productive member of society and to that end she helped many young adults
realize their goal of a college degree. She started her accounting career at Economic Security in Joplin,
MO, a Missouri Community Action Agency. Judy was a lifelong Democrat. She believed all the way to
her core that we can end poverty by providing programs, services and support for families to help them find a way out of poverty. She championed this cause throughout her 35+ year career in the Community
Action Agencies across Missouri from Economic Security in Joplin, Mo to SCMCAA in Winona, MO.
She loved her family, flowers, shopping, crocheting and sewing. She could often be seen weeding her
gardens and caring for her plants. Her home was always open to her loved ones whether it was for a
short visit or a yearlong stay.
