Jefferson City, MO. – The Missouri Senate resumed its legislative session on Monday and began with 13 hours spent on Senate Bill 39.
Senator Holly Thompson Rehder (R-Scott City) is the sponsor of this bill that would pull all state funding from any school, public or private, that allowed a student assigned male at birth to compete in athletic competitions on female teams.
In the 2021-2022 school year, only five transgender students applied to the Missouri State High School Athletics Association to compete according to their gender identity.
She tells her colleagues her proposal seeks to establish guidelines for student participation in athletic contests organized by sex:
But Sen. Tracy McCreery (D-St. Louis County) says she does not see the need for this legislation:
After all-night discussions and a lengthy filibuster, Senate Bill 39 was given first-round Missouri Senate approval. Missouri senators then gave Senate Bill 49 preliminary approval. This proposal would establish the “Missouri Save Adolescents from Experimentation, or SAFE, Act.”
