Mizzou Women’s Basketball’s Hot Shooting Leads to Victory over Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – Five Tigers scored in double figures to lead Mizzou Women’s Basketball (7-7, 3-6 SEC) to an 85-75 victory over Auburn (5-13, 0-10 SEC) on Sunday afternoon at Auburn Arena. Redshirt junior forward LaDazhia Williams (Bradenton, Fla.) led the charge for Mizzou, scoring 19 points with six rebounds, while sophomore guard Aijha Blackwell (Berkeley, Mo.) recorded her sixth consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Tigers’ hot shooting returned in the victory, as the Tigers shot 55.7 percent from the field (34-of-61) and 52.9 percent from three (9-of-17).

Turning Point

Mizzou led by just three at the halftime break, 45-42, but opened the second half on a 20-4 run to extend its lead to 19 with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter. Auburn was able to cut the lead to nine once midway through the fourth quarter, but was unable to get any closer as the Tigers gained control for the remainder of the game. In that control-grabbing third quarter, Mizzou shot 66.7 percent from the field (10-of-15) and 75 percent from three (3-of-4) as Mizzou outscored Auburn, 28-19.

  • Williams led Mizzou in scoring for the sixth time this season as she scored 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field while adding six rebounds.
  • Blackwell posted her sixth consecutive double-double and the 10th of her season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Redshirt junior guard Haley Troup (Gadsden, Ala.) scored 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting from deep while adding a team-best five assists.

Notes

  • Mizzou shot 55.7 percent from the field (34-of-61), the eighth time this season Mizzou has shot at least 50 percent from the field. It also marked the 10th time this season the Tigers have shot 40 percent or better from the field.
  • Mizzou shot 52.9 percent from three (9-of-17), its second-best mark of the season from deep, only trailing is 69.2 percent performance (9-of-13) against Southern Illinois (Dec. 20).
  • Mizzou outrebounded Auburn, 35-27, the ninth time in 14 games it has outrebounded its opponent.
  • The Tigers dished out 20 assists in the game, its second-best mark of the season, only trailing the 22 it dished out against New Orleans on Dec. 16.
  • Williams led the team in scoring for the sixth time this season with 19 points, the 13th time this season she has reached double figures and the sixth time she scored 15 points.
  • Williams’ six rebounds marked the eighth time this season and the 13th time in her career she’s reached 15 points.
  • Troup scored in double figures for the fourth time this season and the 11th time in her career with 13 points.
  • The junior guard matched a season-best marks in three-pointers made (three) and assists (five).
  • With 12 points, Blackwell continued her stretch of scoring in double figures, doing so for the 14th time this season and for the 29th consecutive game dating back to Jan. 12, 2020.
  • Blackwell attacked the glass once again, as she grabbed 10 rebounds to record her sixth consecutive double-double, the 10th of her season and the 17th of her career. She is the first Tiger player to record six straight double-doubles since Christelle N’Garsanet did so during the 2005-06 season.
  • Sophomore forward Hayley Frank (Strafford, Mo.) scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting to record her 10th game in double figures this season and the 30th of her career.
  • Redshirt senior guard Shug Dickson (St. Louis, Mo.) had 13 points to record her seventh game in double figures this season and the 33rd of her career.
  • Freshman guard Mama Dembele (Manlleu, Spain) recorded a career-best four steals in the game, the best mark of any Tiger this season.
