COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 25 Missouri softball (29-17) powered past Saint Louis (20-22), 9-3, with the help of six extra base hits Wednesday afternoon. Brooke Wilmes broke the Tigers’ all-time extra base hit record, becoming the first Mizzou player to reach 100.
RECAP
After scoreless frames in the first and second, the Tigers got on the board in the third. Emma Raabe cranked a solo home run down the left field line to get the scoring started before Brooke Wilmes added a two-run shot giving Mizzou a three-run cushion.
The Billikens got a run back in the top of the fourth on a pair of singles and a ground-rule double off the bat of Cami Newbanks. The Tigers put up three runs once again in the home half. Casidy Chaumont and Kara Daly each singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. As Kara Daly stole second, the attempted pickoff throw to third was offline allowing Chaumont to run home. Hatti Moore then smacked an RBI triple down the left field line, bringing in Daly for a 5-1 Tigers lead. Moore and Jenna Laird executed a perfect squeeze play, putting the score at 6-1.
Mizzou ran into some trouble in the top of the fifth. SLU loaded the bases before Kowalik lined a ball back up the middle that was knocked down by Schumacher in the circle. The throw home sailed high allowing a run to score. Alex Honnold threw out a runner from eight field to limit the damage to just one more run in the inning, a bases loaded walk as the Tigers kept a 6-3 lead
The Mizzou bats kept on rolling with a fifth inning lead off double by Kendyll Bailey. Kimberly Wert homered for the fifth time in the last four games to put the score at 8-3. Brooke Wilmes added another one to the tally with an RBI double down the right field line in the sixth.
Laurin Krings tossed two shutout innings of relief with three strikeouts to close it out.
NOTES
Brooke Wilmes became Mizzou’s all-time extra base hit leader with a two-run home run in the third inning. She is the first Tiger to reach 100 extra base hits in a career.
Wilmes also moved into second on Missouri’s all-time hits list (274), seventh on the home run list (41), and is now tied for first on the Tigers’ career doubles list (56).
Additionally, Wilmes has four-straight multi-hit games and is in the midst of an eight-game hitting and RBI streak.ver that stretch, she is batting .556 (15-for-27) with three doubles, six home runs, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored.
Emma Raabe added her third home run of the year to give the Tigers the lead in the third inning. Mizzou would never relinquish the lead.
Hatti Moore’s RBI triple was the first triple of her collegiate career.
Megan Schumacher picked up her fifth win of the year, going five innings while allowing only one earned run.
The Tigers have hit three home runs in each of the last four games.
