NASCAR has been called ‘pathetic’ by some of its most loyal fans after the company tweeted a message to its fans wishing them ‘Happy Holidays’ a week before Christmas.
NASCAR tweeted, ‘To all those celebrating this month, we wish you a safe and joyous holiday season!’
Christmas is widely celebrated by the largely Christian and conservative fan base of NASCAR.
The use of ‘Happy Holidays’ instead of ‘Merry Christmas’ and the phrase ‘to all those celebrating this month’ came across as awkward and triggered a host of negative reactions from the NASCAR fan base online.
One wrote, ‘I think what you meant to say was ‘Merry CHRISTmas’!!!’
And another, ‘Its Merry Christmas and Happy New year, but thanks.’
‘Screw that! MERRY CHRISTMAS!’ tweeted another agitated NASCAR follower.
In recent years, NASCAR has made efforts to diversify its fan base and attract a more diverse group of fans.
