Summer Break Starts Today; Drive with Care

Many schoolchildren will be exiting school today with summer break on their minds. For students, this period of the year is a time of relaxation, freedom, and playtime. For parents, it means extra plans for childcare and activities with their family. Lastly, for drivers, this means increased caution on the roadway to account for extra pedestrians out for a stroll.

Many school-age children will be out and about, in neighborhoods, around pools, parks, shopping areas, and more. As adult drivers on the roadway, we are responsible for the safety of pedestrians. Keep in mind that children may not always have the best judgment when crossing streets or being aware of vehicles traveling the roadways.

Tips for safe driving include:

-Slowing down to 15-25mph when children or items used by children are present, to account for unexpected problems.

-Keep your vehicle’s headlights on. This will help all around maintain visibility on you while you drive.

-Stay aware when traveling near rows of parked vehicles. Children can easily slip between them unseen by most.

If you see a child attempting to cross a street, make eye contact with them. This will communicate they are seen and you can watch for their next step.

-Avoid distractions. Phones, passengers, and even your vehicle’s settings and devices can make for a distracting environment.

In addition to incorporating these guidelines into your daily drive, be aware that summer is a time when many student drivers will be hitting the roadways, whether to learn how to drive or to travel to their summer jobs. Make sure you account for the possibility of other drivers not having the same level of experience as yourself or other motorists.
