The Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzlies took on the Memphis Day Gladiators from Memphis, Tenn. at the West Plains Civic Center on December 13, 2023. This is the Grizzlies first time playing against the Gladiators and the crowd and players were curious to see how this game would turn out.
The first half is best described as a very close game. The Grizzlies started off with an early lead against the Gladiators but West Memphis would take the lead as both teams moved into double digit scores. The Grizzlies would not take the lead again until a successful 3-point shot at the halftime buzzer and a score of 45 to 44.
A close score would not be seen for a few minutes as the second half started and the Gladiators took a double digit run on the Grizzlies. MSU-West Plains would catch up and the lead would continue to trade back and forth and the half would end in a tie at 87.
In the first overtime period (yes, FIRST overtime), one Memphis Day player would continue to push the scores ahead with consistent successful three-point shots but, the Grizzlies would tie the score and push the game into a second overtime period.
Double overtime would decide the game. The Grizzlies played better defensive ball in this period. That, mixed with more successful free throws, would help seal their victory over the Gladiators, 113 to 110.
The MSU-West Plains Grizzlies defeat the Memphis Day Gladiators in double overtime, 113 to 110. Their next game will be against the Link Year Prep Lions on January 4, 2024.
