Wasola, MO. – An infant is in the ICU after sustaining serious injuries in a crash on Highway 5.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on September 7, 2024, ten miles south of Ava. A vehicle driven by Darci Dimirsky was struck from behind when another vehicle failed to yield at a sign. Dimirsky and her infant daughter, Dawna, were both injured in the crash. The initial report indicated that Dawna had suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to Cox South in Springfield, Missouri, for treatment.
Dawna is now on a ventilator in the pediatric intensive care unit at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, with her injuries classified as serious. Dawna’s grandmother, Lisa Pelham, told the Ozark County Times that the infant sustained a skull fracture and multiple facial fractures, among other injuries. After being airlifted to Cox South, doctors determined that her injuries were more extensive than initially thought and transferred her to Children’s Mercy Hospital. Pelham stated that doctors had hoped to remove Dawna from the ventilator, but she experienced several seizures, preventing its removal. As of noon yesterday, September 12, 2024, Dawna remains on the ventilator.
Pelham expressed the family’s gratitude for the donations they’ve received to help cover medical expenses. If you would like to donate, click here.
