MOUNTAIN HOME, AR – The Baxter County Library Foundation is excited to announce that it has been awarded $456,000 in federal funding through the Arkansas Department of Transportation’s 2024 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). This grant represents 80% of the funding needed to construct the Library Hill Trail, a project that will connect the Library to the broader community through enhanced pedestrian and recreational access.
Library Hill Trail is envisioned as a vibrant addition to the existing trail system including trials at McCabe Park and Arkansas State University – Mountain Home (ASUMH). The approximately three-quarters of a mile long trail has not yet been designed, and the Library Foundation will work to raise the remaining 20% of the project cost to bring this vision to life.
The City of Mountain Home has already secured grant funding to complete a spur connecting the James and Sally Moore Recreational Trail up to the sidewalk near College Street and install a crosswalk connecting the ASUMH trail to the Library property. Together, these efforts will create a safer connection between the Library and the existing trail network, improving accessibility to the Library for pedestrians and bicyclists, especially ASUMH and Mountain Home School students.
According to Baxter County Library Director Kim Crow Sheaner, “We have been imagining the Library Hill Trial for quite a while, and with the trails at McCabe Park and ASU in place, this is perfect timing. We are excited about providing safer access to the Library for area students and as well as promoting health and wellness in our community.”
The Library Hill Trail project underscores the Library’s commitment to fostering a connected, active, and vibrant community. Further updates on the trail design and fundraising efforts will be shared as the project progresses.
