The St. Louis Cardinals selected the contract of RHP Luis Gastelum (gas-teh-LOOM) from Memphis (AAA). In a corresponding move, LHP Jared Shuster was designated for assignment. Gastelum is set to make his Major League debut.
Gastelum, 24, was an international free agent signing out of Mexico in April 2023 after pitching two seasons for Los Mochis in the Mexican League. He posted a 7-1 record with a 2.27 ERA in 36 appearances for Memphis, locking down three saves and striking out 49 batters over 43.2 innings pitched.
Gastelum has not been scored upon over his last 18 appearances, tied for the longest minor league scoreless streak this season. The streak dates back to May 21, compiling 22.1 innings with an 0.58 WHIP allowing just eight hits and five walks. He’s made eight appearances of four outs or more during that stretch.
The 6-foot-1, 185 lb., Gastelum is ranked No. 21 by MLB Pipeline and No. 25 by Baseball America among prospects in the Cardinals organization. Over his professional career, Gastelum has appeared in 132 games compiling a 17-10 record with a 3.33 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and has averaged 11.76 strikeouts/9 IP.
When he appears in his first game, it will mark the 7th Cardinals player to make his Major League debut this season and 4th pitcher joining RHP Matt Pushard, LHP Brycen Mautz and RHP Max Rajcic. Hailing from Ahome, Mexico, Gastelum will become the 17th Mexican-born St. Louis Cardinal and first pitcher to appear in a game since Giovanny Gallegos in 2024.
He will wear uniform No. 72.
