Funeral Services for Mackie Ray Johnson, Age 79 of Thayer, Missouri will be held on Saturday, September 26th, 2026 at The Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Thayer, Missouri, beginning at 2:00 PM. Visitation will precede the service, beginning at 1:00 PM. Burial will take place in The Thayer Cemetery, Thayer, Missouri.
Mackie Ray Johnson, 79, of Thayer, Missouri, passed away peacefully at his home on September 22, 2026. He was born on December 7, 1946, in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, to Fred and Nova (Reeves) Johnson.
On May 16, 1966, Mackie married the love of his life, Naomi Louise Lawson. Together, they shared 60 beautiful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, hard work, and countless memories. They were blessed with two children, Jo Lynn Austin and Bryan Johnson.
Mackie found joy in the simple things in life, especially time spent outdoors. He took great pride in his garden, which many would say was the most beautiful and weed-free garden they had ever seen. He enjoyed flintknapping, fishing, hunting, and golfing, always finding something to keep his hands busy and his mind engaged. But perhaps nothing brought him greater joy than watching his son and granddaughter develop their own passion for the game of golf. Their time together on and around the course created memories that will be treasured for generations.
Mackie was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend. He would do anything for his family and was never afraid to do what needed to be done. He was passionate about the things that mattered to him, and he was a hands-on man who could fix nearly anything. If something was broken, Mackie would find a way to make it right. He was a man of few words, but those who knew him understood that he didn’t need many—his actions spoke louder than words ever could. His love was shown through the things he did, the problems he solved, the time he gave, and the quiet ways he cared for the people around him.
Mackie is survived by his wife, Naomi Johnson; children, Jo Lynn Austin (Lenny), of Holden, Missouri, and Bryan Johnson (Tyra), of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; granddaughter, Alexandra Johnson; brother, Don Johnson (Sue); sister, Diane Rogers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Nova Johnson; sister, Carolyn Ainsworth (Roy); and brothers, Freddie “Darrell” Johnson and Stevie Johnson.
Mackie will be remembered as a man who loved deeply, worked hard, and lived life in his own quiet, steady way. He found happiness in his family, pride in the work of his hands, and peace in the outdoors he loved so much. He taught those around him that love doesn’t always have to be spoken—it can be found in a well-tended garden, a repaired piece of something broken, a day spent fishing or golfing, and simply being there when someone needs you. His greatest legacy will be the love he gave his family and the memories he leaves behind. Though he may no longer be here to walk beside them, the lessons he taught, the love he shared, and the life he built with Naomi will continue to live on in those who knew and loved him.
