A male subject was taken into custody after deputies responded to a domestic incident on Park Street in Ava. Paul E. Newman, who had an active warrant for arrest, resisted repeated requests to exit his vehicle, and once he did exit the vehicle, Newman repeated threats of physical violence and said that he would spit on the deputies.
Once Newman was taken to the Douglas County Jail, he continued to threaten physical violence and, at one point, a taser was used on Newman as he raised a clinched fist toward Sheriff Chris Degase. Pepper spray was also used on Newman during intake. Paramedics were called to check Newman’s injuries and vitals.
During Newman’s intake process, he repeatedly stated that he had recently moved to Ava, and that he now planned to target law enforcement officials at their homes. Court records quote Newman as stating, “I am going to show you how we rock out. I am telling you any of you all officers don’t leave that cop car in front of your house. On my grandmother, I am about to ride around this little town.” According to a probable cause statement, Newman made several other direct threats.
Newman is being held without bond.
