From the City of West Plains:
STORM RESPONSE: BY THE NUMBERS
One week ago, powerful storms brought intense rain, high winds, and flooding to West Plains. Here’s a look at the impact—and the incredible response that followed:
- 10 inches of rain fell between April 4 and April 6
- Due to frequent and multiple lightning strikes, 1,500+ electric customers without power at the peak
- Major circuits impacted: Saint Mary’s Church, Wastewater Plant, Davis Drive, Quail Run, Timber, and Stoneybrook subdivisions
- 25 structural inspections completed
- $89,100.00 in total estimated structural damage
- Multiple roads closed due to flooding
- 45 tons of brush delivered to the Transfer Station so far
The Transfer Station – 1853 Old Airport Rd – is still accepting storm debris free for residents (proof of residency required). We’ve talked a lot about our Water Detention Basins, so How much water did the basins hold? Thanks to improved stormwater infrastructure, our detention basins made a big difference. Each one holds approximately 14,755,000 gallons of water—that’s the equivalent of 15 full water towers, like the one located on Aid Avenue. The North Fork Basin on Deatherage Avenue alone prevented a massive surge of floodwater from rushing into town. This event tested our systems—and they held strong. That’s thanks to large-scale improvements since 2017, regular maintenance by our Street Department, and the dedication of City Electric, Police, and Fire crews.
West Plains continues to weather every storm.
