Dixon Man Facing Assault Charge in Shannon County

A Dixon man is facing a domestic assault charge after deputies responded to a disturbance in Eminence on August 20.

According to a probable cause statement filed by the Shannon County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived around 12:36 p.m. after reports of an altercation involving Joseph Lee Carney and two victims. Both victims provided consistent accounts of Carney yelling inches from Victim 1’s face, demanding she choose between him and another person. The document states Victim 1 began hyperventilating and experiencing chest pain, taking nitroglycerin due to a known heart condition.

Deputies say Carney then went outside and threw Victim 1’s belongings from her vehicle. When Victim 2 attempted to guide him away so Victim 1 could recover, Carney allegedly became upset and forcefully shoved Victim 2 into an ice cream freezer. The impact caused visible redness and back pain.

Deputies detained Carney at the scene. He reportedly claimed he was pushed first and only “stiff‑armed” Victim 2, but investigators noted his account was inconsistent with witness statements and physical evidence.
