With spring underway and black bears becoming more active, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is reminding residents to “Be BearWise” to help avoid potentially dangerous encounters and property damage.
Missouri is home to over 1,000 black bears, most of which reside in the southern part of the state. As these animals leave their winter dens in search of food, MDC is urging the public to secure bear attractants such as bird feeders, trash, barbecue grills, and pet food.
“Keeping areas free of food attractants and letting bears find natural foods is in everyone’s best interest,” said MDC Furbearer Biologist Nate Bowersock. He warned that intentionally feeding bears can make them too comfortable around humans, often resulting in property damage or the bear needing to be euthanized.
MDC also provided practical tips:
-
Store trash in bear-proof containers.
-
Keep grills and pet food indoors.
-
Avoid bird feeders from April to November.
-
Use electric fencing to protect food sources like beehives and gardens.
-
Keep campsites clean and food stored securely.
Although black bears are generally shy and non-aggressive, Bowersock emphasized the importance of not approaching them and always allowing an escape route.
