The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is calling on bird enthusiasts across the state to lend their eyes and ears to science. Volunteers are needed to assist with eight vacant bird-observation routes as part of the 2025 North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), running May 27 through July 7.
This vital, long-running survey collects data to monitor the health and trends of bird populations across North America. MDC is specifically seeking experienced birders who can identify birds by sight and sound, as most birds recorded during these surveys are singing males.
The eight Missouri routes in need of volunteers are:
- Graydon
- Ohio
- Lucerne
- Milford
- Richland
- Doe Run
- West Plains
- Hayti
Each route spans 24.5 miles, with 50 stops at half-mile intervals. At each stop, volunteers conduct three-minute point counts, recording all birds seen or heard within a quarter-mile radius. Surveys begin 30 minutes before sunrise and take about five hours to complete. Volunteers only need to survey their assigned route once during the survey period.
