Pilot of Fatal April Plane Crash Identified, Likely Committed Suicide

A recent release of information from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) appears to indicate the pilot of last month’s fatal plane crash in a Fulton County, AR. quarry was a successful suicide attempt.

The pilot, identified as 67-year-old Ash Flat resident, Steven D. Gill, was the owner of the quarry where the plane was found. Additionally, records from the NTSB show that the plane took off from Gill’s private airstrip for personal reasons.

Eyewitness accounts from the time of the crash tell that the pilot circled the quarry several times before eventually accelerating into the quarry wall. Additionally, all investigation from the NTSB shows that there were no malfunctions within the body, engine, or propellers of the craft before the time of impact.

Gill was the primary suspect in a rape case from May of last year. Gill was arrested at the time and admitted to the rape while under a polygraph test, and was released after posting a $250,000 bond.

The preliminary report from the NTSB can be read below.
