West Plains, MO – A search is underway for 49-year-old Jon Ganz, who went missing during the severe flooding that struck southern Missouri over the weekend. Multiple agencies are involved in the ongoing efforts to locate him, including the Oregon County Sheriff’s Office, Springfield Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), and the U.S. Forestry Service.
According to law enforcement, Jon Ganz contacted the Oregon County Sheriff’s Office around 9:15 p.m. on April 5, stating that his truck had gone off the road. Deputies responded to assist and successfully got his vehicle unstuck. He was then directed toward his last known destination—a motel in West Plains—where he was expected stay. However, Jon never arrived.
The next day, Jon’s truck was discovered abandoned in Thomasville, an area that had been under evacuation orders due to extreme flooding. Inside the vehicle, officers found his cell phone, clothing, and shoes, raising serious concerns about his safety and well-being.
Shortly after, the Missouri State Highway Patrol issued a Missing Person Alert for Jon Ganz.
On April 6, the MSHP Water Patrol attempted to search the area using a boat, but the operation was halted due to heavy debris blocking the waterway. Search efforts resumed on April 8, once flood conditions had improved. Despite continued efforts, Jon Ganz remains missing.
According to the official Missing Person Report, Jon is described as 5’10”, approximately 195 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing an orange t-shirt and black sweatpants. Authorities also noted that Jon may have been experiencing mental health issues in the days leading up to his disappearance.
His wife, who is staying temporarily in Springfield, continues to hold out hope for his safe return.
