Severe Storms Expected to Impact Mark Twain National Forest

The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather forecast for Missouri, with powerful storm systems expected to bring six to fifteen inches of rainfall to parts of the state over the coming days. Along with the potential for flash flooding, these storms are predicted to produce high winds reaching up to 70 mph and baseball-sized hail, making public safety a top priority.

As the storm front moves in, Forest Service personnel are closely monitoring water levels in local creeks and rivers to assess potential flooding risks. Some areas of Mark Twain National Forest are expected to be significantly impacted, leading to temporary closures of multiple recreation sites until conditions improve.

To ensure public safety, several recreation areas will be temporarily closed or have their season openings delayed:

  • Eleven Point Ranger District – Greer Crossing, Deer Leap, and Float Camp will be closed until the storm system passes.
  • Ava/Cassville/Willow Springs Ranger District – The North Fork Recreation Area’s season opening will be delayed beyond the weekend to allow for a post-storm safety evaluation. Additionally, gates at Bar K will be closed, as the site frequently floods during heavy rains.
  • Houston/Rolla/Cedar Creek Ranger District – Stone Mill (near Fort Leonard Wood) is expected to experience high water levels and will also be temporarily closed.

Forest Service personnel will continue monitoring roads, trails, and infrastructure over the coming days and will announce additional closures if necessary.

As the situation develops, the Mark Twain National Forest team remains committed to public safety and encourages everyone to take necessary precautions. More updates will be provided as needed.
