Toxic, Invasive Worm Has Been Reported in the Ozarks

An invasive South-East Asian worm has been reported in the Ozarks, and experts have advised that encounters with these worms should not only end in a report, but in the death of the worms.

The worm is known as the Hammerhead Worm, known for the distinct shape of its head. Described as a “toxic terrestrial flatworm”, the Hammerhead Worm can flatten its body and excrete a toxin that can cause irritation, nausea, vomiting, and other symptoms.

In addition, these worms can spread parasites and will feed on your more innocuous and helpful native earthworms.

If you encounter these invasive worms, experts suggest handling them with gloves, and being sure to kill them with salt, vinegar, or hot water.
