West Plains, MO. – Two West Plains men were arrested following an incident where a man fired a gun at others on July 9, 2023.
According to the probable cause statement, West Plains Police officers responded to a residence on Walker Street in West Plains at roughly 4:28 p.m. for a report of a man with a firearm, displaying it in a threatening manner. Upon arrival, officers conducted a traffic stop on a black truck that was attempting to leave the area, ordering the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle.
The driver was identified as Everett Collins and the passenger as Samuel Detherage, Jr. Both men were handcuffed and taken into custody. A search of the vehicle revealed bags containing 18 blue pills and another with 12 yellow pills, both identified as Alprazolam.
A canvas of the area revealed a black .40 caliber pistol with an extended magazine that was loaded with a round chambered. Detherage admitted to authorities that the gun was his. He told authorities he had been in an altercation with two men on Walker Street where one had brandished a gun and he pulled his gun in response. He stated he fired the gun at the road when the men were running south on the street. He identified the impact area of the bullet to authorities and went on to admit the Xanax bars in the vehicle were his.
A search warrant for narcotics was conducted on Detherage’s residence on Amyx Street and multiple plastic baggies with two containing Alprazolam, knuckles that were brass in color, and a black scale were recovered. Officers noted in the report that the Amyx Street residence was within 2,000 feet of multiple schools and parks.
While being held at the West Plains Jail, Detherage engaged in an altercation with a jailer, injuring the officer.
Everett Collins was charged with possession of a controlled substance, has pled not guilty to the crime, and has been released on a $5,000 bond.
Samuel Deatherage, Jr. is charged with 1st-degree assault, 3rd-degree assault, armed criminal action, discharge/shoot firearm at or from a motor vehicle/shoot at person-persistent offender, unlawful use of a weapon – exhibiting, unlawful use of a weapon – possessing a weapon and a felony controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and delivery of 35 grams or less of marijuana or synthetic cannabindoid to a person less than 17 years of age and 2 years younger. He has pled not guilty to the crimes and has been released on a $50,000 bond.
Deatherage is currently on probation for misdemeanor domestic assault that occurred in April of 2022 and has a felony 1st-degree harassment charge from an April 2023 arrest.
