West Plains, MO. – With the total eclipse coming soon in just over a month to the area, many organizations are preparing for the influx of visitors and presence of events within the Ozarks. The West Plains School District has announced that due to this large event, they will be rescheduling a school day to account for it. The exact statement can be read below.
Zizzer Families,
Our community is in the path of the total eclipse on April 8, 2024. In light of the anticipated influx of visitors to the area on that day, school will not be in session on April 8, 2024. The makeup day for students is scheduled for April 15, 2024. The teacher in-service day is now scheduled for April 8, 2024.
Before finalizing this decision, we gathered input from both parents and staff members. After receiving overwhelming responses from both groups to change the dates, the board of education has approved the calendar change.
We recognize the importance of this event for our community and prioritize the safety of everyone involved. The school calendar change allows the district to adapt to the unique circumstances surrounding the total eclipse and ensure a positive experience for all. Solar eclipse glasses have been purchased for all students and staff. The glasses will be distributed the week before the event.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Wesley Davis
Superintendent
