Zebra Mussels Officially Confirmed in Bull Shoals Lake

Lead Hill, AR. – An invasive species has been officially confirmed to have a growing presence in Bull Shoals Lake near Lead Hill, AR., according to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

This confirmation of presence was performed last week, which has caused a growing concern for the ecology of the lake. The AGFC has stated that zebra mussels, with their fast proliferation in bodies of water, can cause severe damage to the food chain in native lakes and rivers.

While this isn’t the first time zebra mussels have been recorded in Bull Shoals Lake, this does show their number is increasing. No mussels have currently been found in other nearby lakes, and detection plates have been deployed in other bodies of water to confirm this.

The AGFC is urging all who use boats in area waterways to clean, drain, and dry their boats, motors, and trailers thoroughly so as to prevent the potential spread of this invasive species.
