ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is making Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District a top target for takeover in the November election.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Tuesday that state Sen. Jill Schupp earned a spot on the group’s “Red to Blue” list because of Schupp’s fundraising abilities and campaign organization.
Schupp, a Democrat from Creve Coeur, is challenging incumbent Republican Ann Wagner of Ballwin. Schupp was among 12 candidates nationally to make what the group calls the “highly competitive and battle-tested DCCC program that arms top-tier candidates with organizational and fundraising support.”
In 2018, the DCCC put Democrat Cort VanOstran on the list in September, well into the election season. VanOstran lost to Wagner by 4 percentage points in November 2018, Wagner’s most competitive race since she was first elected in 2012.
The suburban St. Louis district traditionally favors Republicans. Schupp raised $475,000 in the month after launching her campaign in December, nearly matching the total Wagner raised in the third fundraising quarter of 2019.
Still, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, which analyzes the competitiveness of congressional contests, as of Tuesday classified the district as “likely Republican.”
