ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis area doctor has been sentenced to 45 days in prison for Medicare and Medicaid fraud.
The U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release that 49-year-old Antoine Adem, of Festus, and his business, Midwest Cardiovascular Inc., also were ordered Friday to jointly pay restitution of nearly $150,000 as well as a fine.
Court documents say the business repeatedly submitted claims for reimbursement that indicated he performed two vein procedures on different days when he actually performed them on the same day, resulting in him being paid about $2,000 more per patient.
Adem and the business also had to give up $1.2 million to the federal government in a settlement following a separate civil suit accusing him of making false claims.
Midwest Cardiovascular has offices in Festus and Farmington.
