Brenda Kay Johnson was born June 18, 1950, in Jonesboro, AR, to Gene and Justine Johnson. She graduated a proud Comet from Alton High School in 1968. Brenda and her junior high/high school sweetheart Stan Bell attended Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. They were married June 14, 1970, in Many Springs. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1972.
Brenda and Stan returned to Oregon County and the Alton area. Brenda worked for University of Missouri Extension as a home economist. She and Stan raised pigs and children in the Royal Oak Community.
Brenda began her teaching career and taught home economics for many years, retiring from her alma mater in Alton. She returned to University of Missouri Extension until her full retirement several years later, earning a master’s degree in education in the interim.
Brenda was not a stay-at-home retiree. She loved the community she was such a large part of and was a tireless advocate, involved in numerous community groups and activities. Brenda loved quilting, crafting, and had a green thumb out of this world. Out of love, she crafted and created a home for her family that is truly remarkable.
Brenda always had a kind word and sweet smile. If she could help, she did. She was a reflection of the Savior she served and loved. Jesus said, “by their fruit you will recognize them.” Brenda will forever be known by her fruit. Her sweet spirit will remain in all the lives she touched and the love she gave.
Brenda is preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Justine Johnson.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Stan Bell; daughter Amy Decker and husband Toby of Weatherford, TX, along with their daughters Addy and Raeley; daughter Alice Bell of Alton, MO along with her son Tucker Combs and his fiancé, Jessee Latham; son Aaron Bell and wife Amy of Charlotte, North Carolina along with their sons Owen and Elliott; a sister Beth Oliver and husband Jeremy of Bolivar, MO; a sister Shirley and husband Gary of Derby, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Brenda “Kay” Bell will be missed by friends and family too numerous to count. We look forward to that glad reunion day.
