Donald “Nova” Moss

Donald Nova Moss, better known as “Novie” by those who knew and loved him best, was a beloved farmer and rancher who had an unwavering love for horses and the agricultural life. Novie passed away on January 23, 2024, in Drury, Missouri. He was born on June 18, 1942, in Bertha, Missouri, to George and Minnie (Thompson) Moss. Donald was 81 years, 7 months and 5 days of age.

Novie’s deep love for animals was evident throughout his life. For over six decades, he resided on the same farm with faithful dedication. The animals under his care thrived under his watchful eye and compassionate nature. He was very proud of his Native American heritage and he lived out those values as he cherished his land and animals. Novie’s life was a testament to hard work and passion. He excelled in every endeavor he pursued and achieved remarkable   success. Among his many accomplishments, he found particular fulfillment in breeding border collies. His talent and dedication allowed him to sell these exceptional dogs around the world. Additionally, his skill in raising feeder pigs earned him great recognition. Not only did Novie excel in his farming ventures, but he also made a positive impact in his community through public service. He served as the County Commissioner for Eastern Douglas County for an exemplary ten years. His commitment to his constituents was unwavering, and his leadership left a lasting impression.

In addition to his work in farming and ranching, Novie served in Vietnam as part of the United States Army. His selflessness and bravery during those difficult times reflect the strength of character that defined him.

While Novie’s professional achievements were noteworthy, it was his warm-heartedness and considerate nature that truly defined him. He was known for his exceptional care and concern for others. Whether it was lending a helping hand or offering a comforting word, Novie showed immense compassion that touched the lives of those around him.

Besides his parents, Novie was preceded in death by three nephews: John Burwick, Dilon Massey, and Dallas Massey.

Novie leaves behind cherished memories that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him best. He is survived by two sisters: Lois Thompson from Mountain Grove, Missouri, and Hazel Burwick from Laughlin, Nevada; one nephew, Steve Massey; and one niece, Joyce Kern. His memory will also be treasured by his special companion, Carmen McCarty, from Mountain Grove, Missouri, as well as her son, Chris McCarty from St. Joseph, Missouri.

Novie will be remembered for his boundless kindness, his unmatched work ethic, and his love for his friends, family and animals. His legacy is one of compassion and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
