ST. LOUIS — Pierre-Luc Dubois scored at 2:25 of overtime to give the Winnipeg Jets a 4-3 win against the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center on Sunday.
Dubois scored with a one-timer from the right circle off a pass from Nikolaj Ehlers on a 2-on-1.
“It’s three guys out there that only have one thing in mind, that’s scoring a goal,” Dubois said of Ehlers and Kyle Connor. “For the other team, it’s a tough decision on who you want to send out there. I think in overtime, it’s a matter of time before somebody scores a goal. … The adrenaline’s going. It’s do-or-die in overtime.”
The Blues were making a line change prior to the goal, and as they were, Jordan Kyrou skated into the Jets zone, something coach Craig Berube said he shouldn’t have done.
“On the one line change there, the guy coming on the ice should probably stay high because we have another guy changing,” Berube said. “[Brayden] Schenn coming off the bench isn’t the issue. It’s the guy before that, OK? Because [Brandon] Saad’s changing, [Kyrou] can’t go running down there. He’s got to stay high with the two guys that are high. Then Schenn comes on the ice and he would’ve been right there with the guy.”
Connor had a goal and two assists, Dubois and Ehlers each had a goal and an assist, and Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves for Winnipeg (27-23-10), which has won three of four.
“I really liked our level, our desperation,” Jets coach Dave Lowry said. “We played with lots of urgency, we played with lots of … we had a purpose. I really felt that even giving up the goal late, we showed a lot of resiliency and stayed with our game, and we understand the value of getting that extra point.”
Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and two assists, Schenn had a goal and an assist, and Jordan Binnington made 33 saves for St. Louis (34-17-8), which was coming off a 7-4 win at the Nashville Predators on Saturday.
“Overtimes have not been good this year for us (1-6),” Schenn said. “The guys get put on the ice to do it, myself included, and we’ve got to be better.”
Mark Scheifele tied it 2-2 at 6:30 of the third period, knocking in a loose puck near the right post following a scramble in the crease, and Connor put the Jets in front 3-2 at 7:33 following a giveaway by Marco Scandella.
“We already had two point-blank chances before that, so I think the tide was already turning for us, Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler said.
Schenn tied it 3-3 with 2:11 remaining in the third on a one-timer from the left hash marks with Binnington on the bench for the extra skater.
“Just an entry, pretty much everyone touched the puck on the ice, and they challenged [Tarasenko], he threw it down to [Kyrou], and ‘Rouzy’ made a good play to me,” Schenn said. “It was nice to get a point, but we’ve got to find a way to get two.”
David Perron gave the Blues a 1-0 lead at 16:48 of the first period with a power-play goal. He scored with a one-timer from the left circle after Tarasenko’s pass from along the right-wing boards softly went through the legs of Ivan Barbashev.
Perron has scored eight goals in his past seven games.
Ehlers tied it 1-1 at 10:51 of the second period. Justin Faulk turned the puck over on a rush, and Ehlers skated in with Dubois on a 2-on-0 and beat Binnington with a one-timer.
Tarasenko put St. Louis ahead 2-1 with 27 seconds left in the second, shooting five-hole on Hellebuyck from the top of the right circle after Schenn stole the puck from Kristian Vesalainen in the neutral zone.
NOTES: Jets forward Andrew Copp left with an upper-body injury early in the third period following a collision with Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist. Lowry said Copp will be evaluated on Monday. … Connor has scored in four straight games and has seven points in that span. … St. Louis center Robert Thomas was scratched prior to the game because of a non-COVID illness. … Schenn has 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) in 21 games since returning from a lower-body injury on Jan. 17. … Kyrou has 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in his past 11 games. … Tarasenko’s goal was his first since Feb. 22 (nine games). … Sundqvist played 14:19 and was minus-2 after missing three games with a lower-body injury.
