Lady Eagles Win First District Championship

The Liberty Lady Eagles faced the Licking Lady Wildcats for the Class 3 District 10 championship in Seymour. The Lady Eagles were plagued by turnovers in the first quarter. Licking took advantage of the turnovers and jumped out to a 8-2. Liberty battled back to get within 3, before the end of the quarter. Licking led 10-7 after one.

During the first and second quarter, Licking rebounded well which helped them to their lead and stay close, once Liberty took the lead. The Lady Eagles had a sequence of scoring on three offensive possessions in a row, from the three point line. This gave Liberty a 16-14 lead. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter. Liberty led going into the locker room, 21-18.

Liberty opened up a seven point lead to start the third quarter, due to Licking turnovers and foul trouble. Licking fought back and got within one point, 25-24. The rest of the quarter was a back and forth scoring battle. Liberty led 33-30, after three quarters.

During the fourth quarter the Lady Eagles led 37-34. Licking then went on a 7-0 run to take a 41-37 lead. Liberty stayed within 4 points the rest of the quarter. The Lady Eagles tied the game with about one minute remaining. The game was tied at 46, with 30 seconds remaining. A turnover by Licking allowed Liberty to take the last shot. The attempt was unsuccessful and the game went to overtime.

The entire overtime period was a back and forth battle, neither team was relenting. Liberty made 5 free throws in the last 30 seconds to win the game.

The Liberty Lady Eagles WIN the program’s first district title, 60-55 over the Licking Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Eagles will play the winner of the Class 3 District 9 championship on Monday night. The game can be heard on 96.9 the Fox.
