COLUMBIA, MO.— Mizzou Men’s Basketball added a third transfer guard, inking Jarron “Boogie” Coleman from Ball State, head coach Cuonzo Martin announced Friday. A rising redshirt junior, Coleman will have three years of eligibility remaining at Mizzou.
Coleman averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and a team-high 3.2 assists while shooting 47.7 percent from the field, 42.3 percent from deep and 78.1 percent at the free throw line as a sophomore at Ball State. The Indianapolis native broke his foot and missed the season’s first 10 games, but reached double figures eight times in 13 contests.
“Boogie is a leader who is scrappy, hungry and works tremendously hard at his craft,” Martin said. “He takes pride on defense and he’s a playmaker on offense. He makes great decisions, plays at his pace and can score at all three levels.”
Over Ball State’s last five games of the 2020-21 campaign, Coleman exploded offensively, scoring at least 24 points three times in that span, highlighted by a career-high 33-point outburst vs. No. 1-seed Toledo in the MAC Tournament. In the Cardinals’ final nine-game stretch, he averaged 17.7 points, 6.1 boards and 3.9 assists on 51 percent shooting overall and 46 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
“I chose to play for Mizzou and Coach Martin because the staff made me feel like family from day one,” Coleman said. “I also feel like with all the new players and the group we have coming in, we can do something special together.”
Coleman was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2019-20, making 25 starts in 31 games. As a freshman he led all MAC freshmen during league play in scoring, rebounding and assists. He averaged 9.3 points in his first collegiate campaign, cracking the Top Ten of Ball State’s all-time freshman scoring list.
Coleman played at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, earning Indiana All-Star recognition while averaging 17.2 points, 4.1 assists and 2.5 steals as a senior. He guided Cathedral to a City Tournament championship and was ranked the No. 7 player in the state of Indiana’s 2018 Class. As a junior at Cathedral, he poured in 19.7 points per contest and was named to the Indiana Junior All-Star Team.
