Mizzou Set For Road Slate Against Illinois State

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball (4-9) will face off against the Illinois State Redbirds in Normal, Ill., in a four-game series beginning Friday, March 12. First pitch in the series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.

The Tigers and Redbirds will continue the series in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. CT. The finale will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. Friday’s and Saturday’s second games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

The series was originally scheduled to be played as a Mizzou home series in Columbia, but due to forecasted inclement weather in the Mid-Missouri area, the games were moved to Normal to ensure the series be played.

Fans can tune-in to KTGR (105.1 FM, 100.5 FM, 1580 AM) to catch the Tigers throughout the entire 2021 season with Tex Little and Matt Michaels on the call.

THE MATCHUP

  • Mizzou leads the all-time series 6-1 over Illinois State. This weekend marks the seventh through 10th meetings between the two clubs.
  • The Tigers claimed each of the past two meetings, including an 18-5 win in the most recent meeting in 2006.
  • Friday marks Mizzou’s first trip to Illinois State since 2003. The Tigers took home a 4-3 victory on that day.

ON THE BUMP

  • Sophomore ace Spencer Miles will take the ball in the series opener in Normal on Friday evening. The right-hander will head to the mound after throwing 4.1 innings, giving up three runs.
  • Freshman Zach Hise will get his first start of his career in game one of the doubleheader on Saturday. He has been impressive thus far, tossing 7.1 innings and collecting one save.
  • Redshirt sophomore Seth Halvorsen will throw in game one of the Saturday doubleheader. His last time out, he lit up the radar gun, touching as high as 97 mph on his fastball against Oklahoma.

DAY LEADING THE WAY

  • Junior Joshua Day has drawn 10 free passes and a hit-by-pitch in 12 games this season. His patience at the plate has garnered a .479 on-base percentage to go with his team-leading .324 average.
  • Day’s 10 walks rank fifth in the SEC while his OBP sits at 16th in the league.
  • The junior-college transfer has reached safely in each of the 12 games that he’s played in this season.

LOHSE EARNS FIRST W

  • Freshman Ian Lohse picked up his first collegiate win on Wednesday at Saint Louis.
  • The left-hander worked 3.1 IP in relief and did not allow a run or a hit in picking up the win.
  • Lohse struck out a career-best seven batters, including the final batter to seal the 2-1 win.

PATIENCE AT THE PLATE

  • Mizzou has drawn 65 walks in the first 12 games of the season. The total ranks sixth in the SEC and 21st nationally.
  • Lead-off man Joshua Day paces Mizzou with 10 walks in his 11 games played. He ranks sixth in the SEC in walks per game.
  • Seven Tigers have drawn five or more free passes on the year.
