COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri graduate student linebacker Triston Newson earned Southeastern Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors following the Tigers’ 30-23 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday.
Newson’s recognition is his first in a Mizzou uniform and is the Tigers’ third weekly award nod this season after kicker Blake Craig was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 16 and running back Nate Noel was selected the SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 23.
Newson finished with 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, and one forced fumble against the Sooners. His caused fumble was the turning point in the game when he stripped OU quarterback Jackson Arnold of the ball with 22 seconds left before teammate Zion Young picked it up and returned it 17 yards for what would be the eventual game-winning score. His 10 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss were a season high.
The Independence, Mississippi, native now has 254 career tackles, 21.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, and eight forced fumbles to his credit.
The SEC’s other weekly honors included Alabama’s Jalen Milroe (co-offensive), Jihaad Campbell (co-defensive), and Tyler Booker (co-offensive line), Ole Miss’ Caden Davis (special teams), Jared Ivey (co-defensive line) and Princely Umanmielen (co-defensive line) and South Carolina’s Raheim “Rocket” Sanders (co-offensive), Torricelli Simpkins III (co-offensive line) and LaNorris Sellers (freshman).
The Tigers head to Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday for a 3:15 p.m. CT matchup with South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium. The game will be carried on SEC Network.
