The St. Louis Cardinals opened up their series against the Cincinnati Reds with a 3-0 loss at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals got singles from Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado and a walk to Lars Nootbar loaded the bases, but Jordan Walker, rookie Thomas Saggese and Matt Carpenter struck out to end the game. Saggese made his major league debut and went 0-for-4.

Andre Pallante was charged with his eighth loss after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings. St. Louis is six-and-a-half games out of the final NL Wild Card spot at 72-and-72. Lance Lynn starts for the Cardinals against Cincinnati tonight.
