Mountain Grove Animal Control Facing Possibility of Euthanizing Dogs Due To Overcrowding

Mountain Grove, MO. – The City of Mountain Grove Animal Control recently announced on social media that they are facing the possibility of euthanizing dogs due to overcrowding.

Animal Control stated that they have operated as a no-kill shelter for the past two years, but they have now reached a point where there is no longer space for the dogs. As a result, they are faced with the difficult decision of what to do when the dogs’ time at the shelter runs out. According to their policy, they can only hold animals for 20 days.

In an effort to increase adoptions before making a final decision, they have introduced an additional incentive package for anyone who adopts. All adoptable dogs will now come vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Additionally, each dog will come with a voucher for a free rabies vaccine and a coupon for approximately $50 worth of food from Urban Dogg.

This is long-winded, but important. Please read.
I feel a deep need to express the current dog crisis we are facing not just in Mountain Grove, but throughout the country. I feel like the general population doesn’t understand what is going on right now in the shelter/rescue world, and you all deserve to know. In a community that has been extremely supportive of me and my position in Animal Control, I owe this community transparency, even when it’s a hard topic, and I hope this reaches you all with an understanding that this is NOT something I, as your ACO, or just as a person, take lightly.
We have recently seen a rapid uptick in the number of dogs being abandoned, and a drastic reduction in adoptions. Shelters and rescues nationwide are full, and that does not exclude our shelter here in Mountain Grove. The past two years we have celebrated being a No-Kill shelter. I have worked diligently to get dogs adopted and transferred into homes and rescues. We have now hit the point where there is nowhere for these dogs to go.
Through the support of the community, we have been able to find homes/rescue for every adoptable dog we have had in the shelter to date, despite being a municipal shelter (which is a HUGE accomplishment for our town). Unfortunately, we are now faced with the decision of what to do with these dogs when their time at the shelter has run out, and may be facing the possibility of euthanizing good, adoptable dogs. This is not something we ever want to happen, but the situation is becoming critical.
In an effort to increase adoptions, ALL adoptable dogs will come vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Each adoptable dog will also come with a voucher for a free rabies vaccine, and a coupon for approximately $50 worth of food from Urban Dogg.
We truly are trying to do everything we can to help get these dogs adopted.
Per policy, we can only hold animals for 20 days. Every share, comment, like, etc. On the posts increases the dogs’ chance of finding a home. Together, we can all make a difference for the animals.
From a very concerned ACO, please consider adopting from your local shelter/rescue. Please spay and neuter your pets to prevent unnecessary litters. And please be responsible when rehoming your animals, do not abandon them to become someone else’s burden.
