Fire Marshal offers Christmas safety tips

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — With today being Christmas, safety officials are urging people to be extra aware of fire dangers when cooking or decorating.

Missouri State Fire Marshal Tim Bean told Ozark Radio News that people should pay attention when working in the kitchen this Christmas season:

He says people who use candles should also stay safe when decorating their home:

Those with live Christmas trees should also be aware of the potential hazards:

Bean added that people should also check their smoke alarms and replace the batteries in them if they didn’t do that following the time change last month, and should go over fire plans with house guests:

He added that while temperatures aren’t going to be cold this season, people should also stay safe when it comes to fireplaces and space heaters. Space heaters should only be used for short periods of time and be given a minimum of 3 feet of distance away from any other objects. People with fireplaces should only use what logs or fuel they need and always make sure embers are put out before going to bed or leaving the home.
