West Plains, MO. – On May 2, 2024, Missouri State University West Plains will hold its 3rd annual academic symposium at the West Plains Civic Center. The theme of this event is “Astronomy in Ozark Heritage” and there will be several academics and experts on the topic making presentations.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Thomas Kersen the associate professor of sociology and criminal justice at Jackson State University in Mississippi. In addition to Kersen, there will be representatives from DarkSky Missouri; the Department of Language, Culture, and Religion at MSU in Springfield; the Department of Physics at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla; and Truman State University in Kirksville giving presentations in the theater from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Academic Symposium is a free event designed to shine a spotlight on the students from different degree programs and their projects. These projects will be displayed in the Civic Center during the event. Starting at 4 p.m., students and the public will also have the opportunity to speak with the experts and academics giving presentations that night. This will be followed by expert presentations starting at 6 p.m. Presentations featuring general educational topics will be given in the civic center Walnut Room and all presentations regarding nursing and other health topics will be in the Magnolia Room. The event is predicted to end at 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served to the public.
