“Hands-Free Law” to See Enforcement January 1st

Missouri – Starting at the beginning of the year, the hands-free law signed into legislation in 2023 will be enforced, with the likely possibility of costly citations for violators.

Sergeant Eddie Young with the Missouri State Highway Patrol explains that the law targets the use of handheld devices, such as phones and tablets, while driving. Drivers are not allowed to hold these devices while on the road, but the law does not prohibit the use of bluetooth or wireless interactions with these devices.

The primary goal of this law is to reduce distractions on the roadway and prevent potential fatalities resulting from those distractions.

Violators will face a $150 fine for a first offense, with the fine increasing for subsequent offenses, capping at $500 for the third offense.
