Izard County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of phone scam

IZARD COUNTY, Ark. – The Izard County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam reported Wednesday, June 17.

According to the sheriff’s office, a complainant reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be with the Federal Trade Commission. The caller reportedly asked for information, but the complainant refused to provide it. The caller then said they would be contacting the sheriff’s office.

A short time later, the complainant received another call. This time, the caller ID showed the Izard County Sheriff’s Office phone number. A man with a foreign accent identified himself as Sheriff Charley Melton. The complainant hung up before answering any questions.

Officials said the call was a scam.

The sheriff’s office reminded residents that scammers can “spoof” phone numbers, making it appear that a call is coming from a legitimate agency, business or law enforcement office when it is not.

Residents are urged to never provide personal, banking or financial information to unsolicited callers. Officials also advise the public to be cautious of anyone demanding immediate action or threatening consequences over the phone.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call claiming to be from law enforcement or a government agency should hang up and contact that agency directly using a verified phone number.

Those who believe they have been the victim of a scam should contact their local law enforcement agency.
