West Plains, MO. – The U.S. National Weather Service in Springfield, Missouri is warning of dangerously cold wind chills later this week with a chance for snow. The highest chances for snowfall are on Thursday, December 22, with the highest wind gusts and coldest wind chills following on Thursday night and into Friday, December 23.
Wind Chills will cause an increased risk for frostbite and hypothermia. Wind speeds are expected to be 30-45 miles per hour. The coldest parts of the Ozark Radio News listening area will include Wright County, portions of central Texas County, and western Douglas County with -30 to -35 degree wind chills. The warmest areas will be in northern Arkansas, Oregon County, and eastward in Missouri with -20 to -25 wind chills. The rest of the area can expect -25 to -30 wind chills.
The threat of frostbite when the weather is this cold is very real. Exposed skin can begin to experience the effects of frostbite in under 10 minutes with the wind speeds that are expected.
Snow expectations for Thursday in south central Missouri and north central Arkansas are expected to be 2 inches or less.
With such extreme cold temperatures, covering as much exposed skin is the safest measure if you must go out into the elements. Make sure to wear multiple layers of clothing, an insulating coat, gloves, and even a warm face mask. When traveling, make sure to share your travel plans with family or friends, pack an emergency supply kit in your vehicle, ensure your vehicle is winterized, and check the forecast and road conditions.
