From the Howell County Sheriff’s Office:
Today the Howell Sheriff’s Office has received multiple calls regarding jury duty, from residents of Howell County. These calls are from scammers.
A “Sheriff’s Office jury duty scam” refers to a fraudulent phone call where someone impersonates a Sheriff’s Office employee, claiming you missed jury duty and threatening arrest unless you immediately pay a fine, often using scare tactics to trick people into providing personal information or sending money; this is a scam and you should never provide any details or payment to such callers as legitimate courts and law enforcement agencies will never ask for payment over the phone to resolve a missed jury duty issue.
If you receive a call from these scammers, hang up on them. You can also call the Howell County Sheriff’s Office for verification if you are unsure at 417-256-2544.
DO NOT PROVIDE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE AND DO NOT SEND THEM ANY MONEY OR GIFT CARDS.
