Icy roads cause crashes, injuries Monday

WILLOW SPRINGS, Mo. — Two people were injured in separate accidents in the region Monday due to slick roadways.

Reports from the Highway Patrol state the first accident happened on Highway 63 near Cabool around 4:45 pm, when the southbound pickup truck driven by 64-year-old Mikeal Durfey of Willow Springs lost control on an icy roadway, ran off-road and overturned. He suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Texas County Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

The second accident happened just before 9:30 pm at the intersection of Spring St. and Garfield Ave. in Ava when an ambulance began sliding while making a right turn, ran off-road, overturned and then hit the ground and a building. The driver was uninjured but an occupant, 39-year-old Joseph Johnson of Ava, was taken to Cox South hospital in Springfield with moderate injuries.

A winter weather system dumped sleet, freezing rain, and snow throughout the afternoon Monday, leading to slick roads and crashes across the state.
