MDC Finishes Third Round of Brown-headed Nuthatch Reintroduction

Missouri – The Missouri Department of Conservation have recently finished their third round of reintroducing a bird, the Brown-headed Nuthatch to Missouri.

This process if a part of restoring the natural ecosystems of Missouri that existed before extensive logging processes in the early 1900’s wiped out large swaths of shortleaf pine woodlands.

The Nuthatch birds are said to be an integral part in shortleaf pine woodlands, which are being restored inside the Mark Twain National Forest.

A portion of the birds that were released were fitted with small radio transmitters that will allow for monitoring of their movements and survival.

MDC Officials state that this project would not have been possible without their partnerships with several federal and private organizations. This includes the U.S. Forest Service’s Mark Twain National Forest, Ouachita National Forest and Northern Research Station, the University of Missouri, Central Hardwoods Joint Venture, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Missouri River Bird Observatory, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and more.
