In Loving Memory of Arlin Ray
August 31, 1939 – April 8, 2025
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:21
Arlin Ray, 85, a beloved resident of the Handy Community, went home to be with the Lord on April 8, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family. Born on August 31, 1939, in Pine, Missouri, to the late Alvie E. Ray and Bessie (Smith) Green, Arlin’s life was a powerful reflection of grace, resilience, faith, and quiet strength.
Arlin was admitted to Shriners Hospital, where he spent his early childhood—his most formative years—battling a condition so severe that doctors told him he would never walk again. He spent most birthdays and holidays away from home, yet he never let the loneliness or the hardship define him. Against all odds, Arlin not only walked, but he lived with courage and compassion, refusing to let those early challenges harden his heart.
Professionally, Arlin worked as a typesetter for the Post-Dispatch and was known for his talent in small engine repairs. But it was his service to his community and his church that truly defined his character. He was a faithful member of Handy Union Church, where his presence was a steady source of encouragement and warmth.
In the Handy Community, Arlin was a vital and respected figure. He served as Special Road Commissioner, helping maintain the roads that connected his neighbors. He also served on the Handy Volunteer Fire Department Board, supporting the safety and welfare of the people around him. Whether in official capacities or in simple, quiet acts of service, Arlin always showed up for his community. He was the kind of neighbor who could be counted on—faithful, dependable, and full of heart.
He carried both pain and purpose, and in doing so, he bore witness to the goodness of God—even when healing didn’t come in the way the world expects.
His story is one of endurance, quiet strength, and unwavering faith. His life was a testimony. He lived his life with such grace despite some of the odds he faced. He loved the Lord with his whole heart and showed unconditional love to all around him. His legacy is love, and its impact will truly last for generations.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.” – Psalm 23:1–3
Arlin found joy in the simple things: gardening, helping Clara with her many flowers, hunting, fishing, and most of all, spending time with family. He was a man of deep integrity, gentle humor, and steady faith. When his children were school-aged, Arlin took on the role of primary caregiver at home, ensuring they had the steady, nurturing presence they needed. His quiet strength and day-to-day care helped shape their lives in countless ways.
On May 31, 1964, Arlin married the love of his life, Clara Haney, and together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and faith. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a faithful servant of God and his community.
Arlin is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Clara Ray; his daughter, Pamela (Bob) Stark of Doniphan, MO; daughter-in-law, Cindy Ray of Winona, MO; grandchildren, Tiffany, Joshua, Melissa, and Elizabeth; numerous great-grandchildren who brought him great joy; his siblings, Danny Ray of Doniphan and Cynthia (Eric) Walterschied of Doniphan; many cousins who were more like siblings than distant relatives; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved son, Arlin Lee Ray; and six siblings: James Ray, Donald Ray, Wanda Beckham, Ronnie Ray, Anita Blackshear, and Rachel Knight.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” – 2 Timothy 4:7
Arlin lived his life in humble service to his family, his community, and his Lord. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
A life well-lived. A faith well-kept. A love that endures forever.
